Michael Creel has announced the release of ParallelKnoppix 2.3: "Version 2.3 is released. This version synchronises all packages to current Debian unstable and fixes some bugs. In particular, the annoying hang at boot time that sometimes occurred has been solved. Also, the compute nodes can be booted using copies of the CD. This is useful if you can't get PXE boot to work for some reason and your cluster is not too large." Read the brief release announcement on the project's home page. The MCNLive project, which develops specialist Mandriva-based live CDs, has announced a release candidate of a new product that bundles a virtualisation software package: "The first release candidate for the upcoming MCNLive VirtualCity edition is out. What's new? The virtualization software VirtualBox OSE is pre-installed. Create new virtual disk images on a hard disk, run existing images stored on your hard disk. Requirements: enough RAM. Please give us some feedback, test and report bugs, either on Mandrivaclub.nl or via email. A bunch of packages have been updated from the official Mandriva 2007 update mirrors, including the kernel. - Mandriva has announced the availability of a new live CD edition with a unique 3D desktop environment - Mandriva One 2007 "Metisse": "Metisse is a window manager developed by the In Situ project. Available under the General Public Licence exclusively for Linux, Metisse differs from a classic 3D desktop ('the cube') in the way that it offers innovative windows interactions, thus enforcing work efficiency." Originally released to the members of the Mandriva Club only, the CD image with GNOME and Metisse is now available for free download from Mandriva mirrors. - The name sidux represents a new project and distribution created by a recent split in the KANOTIX developer community. After two months of work, the initial preview version of sidux 2007-01 has been released for public testing: "I have the pleasure to announce the first public preview for sidux 2007-01. This release is a proof of concept for the sidux building environment. What's on the menu: amd64 and i686; Debian 'sid', up to date as of 2007-01-24; kernel 2.6.19.2; minimal, but fully functional KDE 3.5.5; completely overhauled live mode; largely adapted installer; new graphical installer front-end...." - Warren Woodford has announced the fourth beta release of SimplyMEPIS 6.0-4, now with an option to install the distribution on a USB key: "MEPIS has announced Beta4 of SimplyMEPIS-32 and SimplyMEPIS-64 Version 6.0-4. This release introduces several improvements in wireless support and the introduction of MEPIS live on a USB key. In Beta 4, SimplyMEPIS adds the NXclient as a pre-installed application. The kernel drivers for FUSE, rt61, and ALSA have also been updated to the latest version. A driver for alt1 Gigabit LAN chip has been added. While improving the MEPIS utilities they were renamed as 'Assistants' to better communicate that they are there to help one easily configure the system."
